Over the course of nearly 20 years, HERBS AMERICA'S founders have used USDA agriculture and agro forestry permits to develop more than 400 rare fruits and new superfoods for introduction into the farming sector and natural foods market.

To accomplish this HERBS AMERICA works directly with botanists, tribal leaders, universities, and laboratories to cultivate and research traditional medicines which are found to be beneficial for both humans and the land.

Our goal is to bring equibility to small farming operations in developing countries and support indigineous populations in their efforts of preserving culture and environment while at the same time supporting agrarian economies.

Working in more than thirty countries around the world, the company regulary donates and exports fruit trees and vegetable seeds to dozens of farmers in countries on five continents.

Our long term philosopy commits us to our product lines long after they leave the farms and jungles.

Over the years, we have come to understand that good nutrition is often the defining factor between healthy, happy cultures and overstressed or impoverished communities. We have discovered that much of the devastation to the earth forest is a result of farming operations. We hope to almelierate this by practicing permaculture and a sustainable harvest where ever we work.

We expound on the belief that a nutrient-rich food supply can contribute to emotional and spiritual aspects such as tranquility, contemplation and compassion for others. Chemical imbalances in the body govern the attitudes and mood. Good health, endurance and cheer are bounties un-measurable by monetary means, and can contribute to peace on the planet.

One of the most inhuman things a company can do to a small farmer is to pressure them to use chemicals or short sighted farming practices. We never pressure our growers to utilize chemicals to increase yield. In fact, we promote organic agriculture and collaborate with traditional farmers who only use only organic methods. We like to say: "Eat well! Think well! Live close to nature and work for the good of the community!"

We believe that traditional wisdom and modern science can combine important resources for a long term vision of biological health. We are adamant in our support of indigineous land rights and sustainable agriculture.

A large portion of our company's annual budget is designated to help protect natural heritage through conservation projects.

ABOUT THE FOUNDERS:

The HERBS AMERICA COMPANY and MACA MAGIC were founded by Jerome River Black. He was the first to cultivate and distribute live maca root plants in the USA and began germplasm collections and cultivar selection of maca in the Peruvian Altiplano in 1994.

In addition to his studies of maca in the Peruvian highlands, Jerome is a published ethnobotanist with a myriad expertise and extensive history of working within a variety of botanical experiences. He has explored remote rivers, lakes, and forests in dozens of exotic countries, his travels having taken him to the depths of steamy jungles and the tops of 20 thousand foot mountains...

He is the award winner of the Natural foods institute "best new plants award" and the subject of numerous articles about plant exploration. He regularly lectures and teaches others about new and rare foodcrop development.

Jerry currently resides with his family in the lovely rural area of Murphy, Oregon, surrounded by acres of land containing thousands of varrieties of rare plants from around the world.

AMAZON THERAPEUTIC LABORATORIES (ATL) originally came about as a collaboration between Jerome Black, Tom Baldwin, and Shannon Casey- 2 of his long term customers from the early days of the Oregon Exotics Fruit Nursery.

Residing on the big island of Hawaii, Tom and Shannon have since founded and manage a botanical sanctuary of their own known as ULUWEHI FARM & NURSERY, which features several acres of intensively cultivated tropical plants including hard to find Amazon medicinals and wild fruits in order to supply voucher samples for our laboratories.

Tom works with the living botanical germplasm of numerous tropical species and Shannon is a trained geneticist familiar with both temperate and tropical genetics.

Their experience with permaculture enables ATL to plan education seminars directly in the Amazon basin and other tropical regions. Together they are developing protocols for sustainable permaculture designs of tropical plant species for food, fiber, and medicines.

Tom and Shannon's participation ensures that ATL maintains an ethical approach to plant harvesting and sustainable organic cultivation.

OREGON EXOTICS RARE FRUIT NURSERY

HERBS AMERICA was founded by OREGON EXOTICS RARE FRUIT NURSERY in Grants Pass, Oregon. The nursery is home to one of the world's most interesting collections of rare bio-active food plants and exotic fruit trees for temperate North America, and continues to host botanical exploration trips in numerous countries.

At this point, the nursery continues to operate on a specialty only basis.
